INTRODUCTION
In the section, I'll be discussing the process of how the sound for the trailer was made. The sound is one of the key features of the trailer as it sets the atmosphere for the audience. The sound also helps to create that scary factor for the audience as it's helps to build up that tension in the film that the audience will relate with fear.

I started off the project by listening to these three trailer for inspiration. I first listened to the original Grudge trailer " Ju-On: The Grudge" - listening to this trailer help me gain an idea on how to start the trailer, I liked how the eerie sound started from the beginning indicating that nothing normal was going to happen. I also liked the distorted and unorganised sounds from the piano as the montage played given the trailer a spooky mood.
I chose to listen to "The Grudge" because this is the version that most people enjoyed greatly, listening to the trailer help me to get ideas on how to build the tension as well guiding me on when to put different sound in, such as Foley sounds, to get the best effect and for it to work with the visual side of the trailer.
I also listened/watch the "I Spit On Your Grave" trailer because this is the trailer that was used to make the animatic. Some of the sounds that was used in this trailer work fittingly with the animatic - so I thought it would be best to use it to help create a soundtrack. These trailer also helped me with how to make the soundtrack fast when the "action" begins as well as the "bass drops" sounds just before something happens or when a trailer appears.

WEBSITES
To make the soundtrack Sound Track Pro was used however, the program did not have all the sound we would of liked to use in our trailer so we used a website that we found Freesound.org to download sounds that other people have created and posted online for people to use. The website works by typing in what type of sound you are looking for. This will then produce a number a results that have been tagged with your keyword , the sound can be sampled before you downloaded. After downloading the sound, you can drag it on to a new track in Sound Track Pro. Some Sounds that we downloaded from this site was:
- 133100__klankbeeld__horror-ambience-10
- 177769__x86cam__dramatic-sting
- 193028__oceanictrancer__massive-bass-blast-drop-bomb

We also used the website http://www.freesfx.co.uk/, it works in the exact same way as Freesound.org
A sound I download from this website was Storm Watch.

Sound starts at 0.04
This sound was downloaded from Freesound.org. The dramatic string was used to build tension in the trailer. I think it worked effectively in creating tension due to the slow increasing of the volume and the unexpected bang at the end. |
|
This sound was also downloaded from Freesound.org. The sound used a foley sound - the sound help to enforce that a character was running up the stairs making the trailer seem more realistic.

This sound was downloaded from http://www.freesfx.co.uk/,.
Just like the dramatic strings, this sound was used to build up tension in the trailer. It was used alongside the dramatic string for extra emphasis - I believe it worked effectively in creating tension because of it's slow pace, eerie sound and distorted keys. |

This sound was downloaded from Freesound.org. It is used at the beginning to set a eerie feel to the trailer automatically making it aware to the audience that this is an horror trailer. I believe that the sound worked effectively because of it's low volume and windy sounds.

EQUIPMENT

The Rode Videomic is a shotgun microphone that is designed to be used for video camera and personal audio recorders. It is attached to the camera with a built-in mounting system which helps to prevent unwanted rumble and vibrations.
We used the Rode Videomic to record a scream that can heard on the video to the right. The scream came out really well, it is heard clearly, loudly and seem really realistic. |

Soundtrack Pro is a music composing and audio editing application made by Apple Inc it includes a collection of over 5000 royalty free professional instrument loops and sound effects.
Soundtrack Pro to compose our soundtrack which can be see in the screenshot on the left. To compose a soundtrack in this application was quite a easy thing to grasp. In this application I learnt to fade in and fade out sounds, shorten and lengthening sounds along with overlapping them to create a soundtrack that would flow in and out smoothly as well as work effectively with out trailer. The application was also used as source to fine sound sound effects and music beds. Two example of sounds that we used that came from Soundtrack Pro can be heard in the video to the right. The Haunted Wind sound was used at the beginning with Horror Ambience sound to create a eerie feel to the trailer. The Swell Scrape Scream was used to announces the appearance of antagonist as well as forthcoming danger. |

Final Cut Pro is a video editing software which allows users to log and transfer video where it can edited, processed and output to a wide variety of formats.
Final Cut Pro was used to put our sound and trailer together. As I was working off the trailer, I did not need exported each sound so that there could be imported into Final Cut Pro then moved around so that they fit the scene it was created. The whole sound track was exported through Soundtrack Pro into a MP3 format and then imported into Final cut pro. This process was simple. |
SCREENSHOTS OF PROGRESSION

EDIT 1This was my first attempt at the making the soundtrack for our trailer. At this point in time I was working off the animatic, I did find this quite difficult due to the fact that working off the animatic and the real recording with people in it is two different thing.
But I worked as hard as I could with what I was presented with and was able to create some music. As it was my first time using Soundtrack, I only worked on putting the sound to the scene and I did not worry about fading them in and out. I also used this time to add potential sound that I thought that we might use in the trailer. I.E. the heartbeat Below you will see some progression that was made on the sound on other edits. |

EDIT 6On this edit on making the sound for our trailer, I was able to work off unfinished edited version of our trailer which I found quite because I able to see what sounds worked effectively with their shots.
As well as taking sounds out, I also worked on fading some sounds in and out - I found this quite difficult because sometimes it would faded out too much meaning that the sound was delayed but with some practice I worked out the best method to do this. Below you will see some more progression that was made on the sound on other edits. |

EDIT 11At this point in time, the sound was nearly done but due feedback that we received from class on the 19/11/13 things in the trailer had to be removed. There was also comments on how the sound ruined the captions and how the footsteps could have been edited so that there could be more scary.
Because of these comments I thought that it would be best to remove the thuds that we have the captions and remove the footsteps that we have and find better ones. |

FINAL SONGOn this edit, I received a new edited version of our trailer in which scenes have been deleted and added. A scene that was added and was quite important was the montage - at first I found it quite difficult coming up with something that would go. I tried another different things to come up with sounds for the montage like messing around in Garage Band and re watching existing horror soundtracks .
Eventually, I found some sounds that worked together effectively to create the sound for this piece. I also spent more time on making sure everything flowed together meaning that you couldn't hear when one sound stop and another started. This was accomplished through fading sound in and out. |
