INTRODUCTION
In this section the costume and makeup looks for all those involved in ‘The Room’ are displayed and evaluated. When designing the makeup and costume looks for ‘The Room’ the character which required the most thought was the antagonist (Yurei), this is why there was more focus on this character and required much more thought/design. The work was planned and designed on a range of different platforms and are displayed below.
LOOK BOOK
Below is a look book, each page is dedicated to a character and depicts all of the makeup and costume that would suit that character. To design each look a profile was made for each character that described their personality, through this the costumes could be designed to reflect each character and their individuality.
Page 1: Yurei
The character on this page is the Yurei, which was our antagonist; the character was based on the typical Japanese ghost that goes by the same name. The board has many pictured of white night dresses in different styles both with and without blood, this was chosen as the main costume because during the audience research this was the clothing option that was chosen. The page also has many images of yurei’s from existing films and how there makeup was done, this enables a range of different looks that can all be used for our own Yurei but still includes the conventional looks that were voted for.

Page 2: Maya
The character on this page is Maya, based on her character profile it was clear she was an innocent young woman and we wanted to portray this as much as possible through her makeup and dress. A range of natural makeup looks were gathered, each look is light and airy giving an open and warm feel mostly with the naturalness of the eyes. Maya’s hair was also important we wanted it to be slightly messy in order to promote her laid back personality; we wanted this laid back feel to continue through from her makeup and hair into her costume. The outfits looked at for Maya were quite casual and girly to assert her innocence and laid back personality throughout, many skirts and light coloured clothing are seen across the page.

Page 3: Kelly
The character on this page is Kelly; based on her character profile it was clear she is a mean girl who is self-absorbed, vain and selfish. Inspiration for Kelly was based on the iconic films ‘Mean Girls’ in this film the girls have full faces of makeup and wear a lot of pink, we wanted to create a subtle link between the two. The makeup looks for the Kelly was based on full faces of makeup which featured a lot of the colour pink, this is done because we wanted to portray her vanity through her face. Most of the costumes and shoes for Kelly are taken directly from the‘Mean Girls’ film which features a lot of pink tops and short skirts along with heeled shoes, we want to apply all of these features to Kelly to strengthen the link between the films and theme but to also portray her materialistic personality.

MAKE UP SKETCHES
Below are two drawings which each depict different looks for the Yurei, each of these looks were inspired by different images found on the Yurei page of the look book.
Yurei, Look 1:
For our Yurei we wanted to keep her as close to the Japanese ghost look as much as possible, we gave her a white base (face/skin) this look is seen in popular J-Horror ghost related films and portrays the sense that the person is diseased/supernatural well. The lips were kept white in order to make the eyes stand out. The Yurei’s eyes are painted in a deep black on both the lid and under the eye; however we added the effect of having tears of blood run from the Yurei’s eyes to subtly represent the pain and suffering the Yurei had been objected to in life. The Yurei’s cheeks are hollowed out also which isn’t common in J-Horrors, this was done in order to represent death and the supernatural further.

Yurei, Look 2:
For the second look for our Yurei we continueD to keep her as close to the Japanese ghost as much as possible, we kept the use of extreme black eye makeup and a white base (face/skin) the same. For this look however we removed the effect of the bloody tears coming from her eyes, we also changed the effect on her lip from plain white to a white/blue ombre. This ombre look was chosen to further show that the Yurei is meant to be dead as when a person dies and blood is no longer pumped through their body their lips become a pale blue. We kept the hollowing of her cheeks the same but also continued to create shadowing in her natural frown lines so that when her face relaxes it looks like she is constantly angry, this was done to portray her pain, suffering and anger in her face using a different method.

Neither of these looks was used as the final look often because there was too much going on at one time however each drawing helped us develop our final look.
REAL MEDIA INSPIRATION
Below I have located a range of real media ispiration for my costume and makeup, this is taken from real J-horror films.
LOOKS IN PRACTISE
Look 1
Below is the first look created for the Yurei with influences from the look book and a take on both sketches combined, the frown lines taken from look 2 faded out of the exaggerated black eye makeup we also hollowed out the cheeks. For the pale base we used a dark brown foundation mixed with white face paint in order to give the Yurei a natural paleness; however when making the Yurei’s lips white it stood out against the skin far too much and gave it a comedic aspect. We used the idea of blood dripping from the Yurei’s eyes to represent a trauma and extended it to the nose and mouth but I found that this also made it look comedic and unrealistic which she did not want.
The video below is the feedback received on Look 1.

Look 2
Below is the second look created for the Yurei this is an adapted look from the first look, we made the Yurei’s face paler using more white face paint which continued on to the lips in the same colour. We proceeded to make the centre of the lips blue; this is because after death when the blood stops flowing the lips becomes blue. We continued to hollow out the cheeks but removed the use of exaggerated frown lines however we did blur out the edges of the eye and gave it a bruised effect. We did not use this look for the final look but our final look was heavily influenced by it.
We did not get any video feedback from this look.

COSTUME & MAKE-UP LIST
The day before shooting all the actors involved were given a copy each of the costume and makeup list, this list consisted of each item of clothing or makeup type the characters were required to bring for the filming day. Below is a copy of the list which was given out.
