INTRODUCTION
This page contains the set work which was given during the summer holidays containing research on the horror genre, film screening critical analysis's of existing horror films and treatments on ideas for possible horror productions which we may go on to produce.
HORROR GENRE RESEARCH
Psychological/Supernatural Horror
I am going to be looking into my chosen sub genre of horror (psychological/ supernatural horror). This means that I am going to be looking into the popular films under this genre, franchises and their success as well as ‘True Story’ events and how much the films are based upon them.
The definition and aim of psychological/ super natural horror is to play on fears and emotional instability of the characters in the motion picture, this is done in order to build tension with the audience as they go into the characters minds. Psychological/supernatural horror aims to create discomfort to the audience by exposing common psychological and emotional fears deep within the audience’s minds which they often repress and deny, in order to create a relation.
True story events, when films claim they are based on true story events it is often true although they are loosely based upon them and often just take the idea of someone’s personal accounts and take the names, the locations, the props and the actual events and completely change them. As the audience the
moment you are told that the film is based on a true story event in subconsciously imprints the idea that this could happen to if it’s happened before, which makes it a great psychological tool.
There have been many films made under this sub genre but what truly kicked off this craze was the film ‘The exorcist’ which was released in
1973 and was one of the highest grossing films of all time grossing over $441million worldwide. ‘The Exorcist’ was based on religion; demons, myths and possession which helped pave the way for film makers today.
Since ‘The Exorcist’ there has been many films produced under the psychological/supernatural horror genre where many take inspiration from this block buster film for example ‘The Possession’ this film was based on a Jewish myth/belief but had in fact taken the idea of a young innocent person being
victim to the evil of demons and spirits. The use of a child or a person who has an innocence has been used a popular tool for this sub genre, it makes the
audience sympathise with the character for their innocence and possible ignorance it taps into the audiences sub conscious as we all know children or someone who is quite innocent which then makes it seem as if it could actually happen to us. This element of innocence can be seen in films such as ‘The Last Exorcism 1&2’ or ‘The Conjuring’ etc. This is the psychological part as your mind has created a connection which the film makers were looking for in order to make it scary to you.
Not all Horror films in this sub genre are based on possession but often have the common factor of a spirit or demon which has come onto earth in some way, some are based simply on the spirits or the people who embody a deep evil such as the franchises ‘The Ring 1&2’ and ‘The Grudge 1,2&3’. Both ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’ films were originally J-Horrors which are simply Japanese Horror films, both of these films have been made into an American Version.
‘The Ring’ grossed $6.6million dollars in the box office and was regarded a success, this success inspired and gave the confidence to other film makers to create more American remakes of J-Horror, on these American J-Horror remakes was ‘The Grudge’. The Grudge made $187,281,115 worldwide; this won ‘The Grudge’ a series of titles amongst which included the second highest grossing remake of the past 40 years as well as being the first film to top Halloween box office since the film ‘House on Haunted Hill’. Both films are regarded great successes.

Trailer Review
I am going to be reviewing two trailers from the psychological/supernatural horror sub genre; I am reviewing these trailers in order to gain inspiration for my upcoming teaser trailer in my A2 work. The two trailers I am looking at are‘The Conjuring’ and ‘The Last Exorcism’.
1. The Conjuring = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k10ETZ41q5o
Whilst watching this trailer I found that an effective point which they included was the black screen and white writing which stated that this film was based on a true story from the beginning of the trailer, this set up the mood for the trailer and whatever was to come much more affective and scary. I also found that through the trailer very quick shots from different scenes in the movie were put together to give me as the audience a feel of tension without giving away all of the story line of the film.
I found that coming towards the end of the trailer they used the black screen and white writing again in-between the compilation of quick cuts with statements such as “This is not a haunting”, “This is not a possession” and “This is the truth.” I found this extremely effective as it really drums in this feel they are giving to the film that it is based on a true story and that these events could really happen to any of us.
At the end of this trailer they wound it down into a calm little scene from the film which they built up quickly into a very quick scary popup which made me as the audience jump, fulfilling its purpose.
Overall I found this trailer extremely well shot and put together in an effective and tension building way.
2. The Last Exorcism = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkkGTJ-JDwI
This trailer is filmed with a hand held camera suggesting that the filmed this way also, even though it is not stated in the trailer it was based on true events like it was in ‘The Conjuring’ it did give off that feel with the use of the hand held camera. The use of this hand held affect gives it a found footage feel making it seem even realer to the audience which is encaging and captivating.
The scenes which they used in this trailer seemed to be edited in a mixture of quick cuts and longer scenes together to give a sense of urgency but give the audience enough information about what is to come. Throughout this trailer there was clear use of tones with the frames during the quick cuts often turning red giving off this sense of danger and foreboding which is inserted to the audiences mind almost subliminally.
Overall I found this trailer well shot but seemed to be lacking in something which would give it a much scarier feel to it.

MOODBOARD
Above is a mood board which I have created using existing posters from the sub genre which I am focusing on (psychological/supernatural horror). I have created this mood board in order to gain an understanding of what the posters for this sub genre often look like but also for inspiration for my own upcoming A2 work.
Makeup Tutorials
I shall be comparing three different makeup tutorials; each tutorial is a different interpretation or recreation of possessed makeup looks that the artist has seen in existing in films. I am comparing these video’s to determine how easy it would be for me to replicate and if it would be practical for me to apply it to my own media film trailer etc.
I am going to be rating each tutorial out of 3 (1 = Difficult to replicate 2 = Medium difficulty to replicate 3 = Easy to replicate)
Makeup Tutorial, Possessed Look 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEZIlYn2Wo0
This tutorial is replicating the possessed look of ‘Samara’ from the psychological/supernatural horror ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Ring 2’, Samara’s look is very close to the look of ‘Kayako’ more commonly known as ‘The Grudge’ from‘The Grudge’ film franchise.
This makeup tutorial is very simple and does not require the use of specialised makeup or equipment such as liquid latex or prosthetic skin, this tutorial uses very simple makeup which looks cheap to access widely at drugstores or on the internet. I have adapted the equipment I would need for this makeup look to make it even cheaper and accessible to me for my own work in my A2 year.
If I was to recreate this makeup look based on the guidance of the artist I would try to access the following:
Face + Body:
- White face paint
- Translucent setting powder
- Coloured eye shadow pallet
- Non toxic glue stick
- Black eye liner
Brushes + Tools:
- Cosmetic sponge
- Concealar brush
- Foundation brush
- Powder brush
- Blush brush
- Shadow brush
Over all I would give this tutorial a 3 out of 3 as it looks easy to replicate as well as highly inexpensive but also it doesn’t look to complicated to produce repeatedly when needed for my upcoming work.
Makeup Tutorial, Possessed Look 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi9lHSEMv1c
This tutorial is replicating the possessed look of what looks loosely based on Regan from ‘The Exorcist’. This makeup tutorial is very simple and gives you the basics of a look which you can then elaborate on to suit yourself; I think this is a good feature as it gives me flexibility to experiment and to find the right look for my own coming A2 work.
This tutorial like Possessed Look 1 doesn’t incorporate the use of any specialised makeup and uses makeup which I believe would be cheap and easy to access from a range of stores or on the internet.
If I was to recreate this makeup look based on the guidance of the artist I would try to access the following:
Face + Body:
- Black eye shadow
- Dark brown eye shadow
- Red eye shadow
- Black eyeliner pencil
- Red eyeliner pencil
- Translucent setting
- Powder
Brushes + Tools:
- Blush brush
- Blending brush
- Angled brush
- Powder brush
Overall I would give this tutorial a 3 out of 3 as it looks easy to replicate and gives me the freedom to experiment and recreate with ease.
Makeup Tutorial, Possessed Look 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zED8755DL10
This tutorial is replicating the possessed look of Regan from ‘The Exorcist’. This makeup tutorial is not as simple as either possessed look 1 or possessed look 2 it requires the creation of legions/scars on the face and the use of specialist makeup such as liquid latex and fake blood, both fake blood and liquid latex is cheap but may take a while to find looking off line.
This tutorial however is detailed and explains well on how to create the legions etc. This tutorial also gives a cheap alternative to create these legions with tissue instead of having to purchase prosthetic skin.
If I was to recreate this makeup look based on the guidance of the artist I would try to access the following:
Face + Body:
- Grey/Green face paint
- Liquid Latex
- Tissue (1” strips)
- Grey eye shadow
- Black eye shadow
- Black gel eye liner
- Dark brown eye shadow
- Plum eye shadow
- Fake blood
- Foundation
- Red eyeliner
Brushes + Tools:
- Blush brush
- Blending brush
- Angled brush
- Powder brush
- Foundation brush
- Cosmetic sponge
Overall I would give this tutorial a 2 out of 3 as it looks easy to replicate but removes the freedom to experiment where the other looks did not. This look also looks a lot more time consuming & I find that if I was to replicate this look I would find it difficult to place the legions in the same place time and time again.
To conclude I find that Possession look 2 would be better suited for my work as it gives me and my other group members the ability to elaborate and expand on the basic makeup to suite our project, I have learnt tricks from the other tutorials which can easily be incorporated into the second look and I believe when I begin my A2 work I will be using Look 2 as my base to elaborate on.

PHOTOS - RIDDLER MASK (MARDI GRAS MASK)
ALL IMAGES WERE TAKEN WITH A CANON 700D BODY & 18-135MM IS STM ZOOM LENS
When I set out to take my photos I used my idea for a new treatment I created over the summer when inspired by the sight of this mask. This mask (above) belongs to my older sister who got it from Venice, Italy. After seeing this mask I decided to do some background research on its history to find out more of its origins.
After searching the words 'italian mask', 'venetian mask' and 'carnival mask' I eventually found out the origins of this mask and its purpose in italy.
Mardi Gras History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_Gras
In Italy Mardi Gras is called Martedí Grasso (Fat Tuesday). It's the main day of Carnival along with the Thursday before, called Giovedí Grasso (Fat Thursday), which ratifies the start of the celebrations. The most famous Carnivals in Italy are in Venice,Viareggio and Ivrea. Italy is the birthplace of Carnival celebrations, having its origins in the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia. The Italian version of the festival is spelled CarneIvale.

THE RIDDLER (ANTAGONIST 1)
For my first attempt at taking images I was restricted in using locations I found. This was due to the fact that my friends brother was unable to leave the house and I had to make due to with my surroundings. To make the costume match the mask I decided to use a shoes, trousers, a waist coat and a top that matches the mask (blue) with a tie. I chose this costume due to the fact that I didn't want to over think the antagonist costume and I wanted it to be simple and effective.
THE RIDDLER (ANTAGONIST 2)
For my second attempt of taking horror photos I had more freedom to go out and take pictures using props and being on location. However, there was some limitations on taking photos, for example... I had to stay around my general area due to the time of day I decided to take the images. I decided to take my images at dawn (5:30 - 6:30) so that I could get the lighting of the night when it's not too dark. luckily I was able to take my images and record in good locations including my favourite.
ANTAGONIST WEAPON ( FAVOURITE PROP)
Whilst roaming around my garden I managed to find an old dull machete knife. Seeing as I can't take this out my house I took images of my subject (Antagonist 2) in my garden during the night so that I could have images of the antagonist using a prop that would be iconic to the characters identity.
OLD BUILDING (FAVOURITE LOCATION)
This was the ideal location that I am lucky enough to live near, this made it easy for travel and shooting on location during late nights. With the cracked upper windows, cemented/ bricked up walls and scratched walls this almost seemed to good to be true as it would be the perfect location of a haunted house in the past that has been sealed off to protect the community... or something along those lines.
THE RIDDLER (TEASER TRAILER) - VIDEO
Although I didn't completely know what I was doing I decided to piece together a trailer from small video clips I done whilst on my photo shoots. I honestly thought this could have turned out better If I had planned and structured this, but I wasn't sure if I would have access to a video editing software at the time so I just went with the flow. In the end I managed to use a friends computer to attempt at making a trailer using the video editing software of (Windows Movie Maker). The only problem I had with this was its limited abilities as an editing software that held me back from making the trailer look neater.
5 FAVOURITE HORROR SOUNDTRACKS
The Exorcist (1973) |
The Fog (1980) |
Friday the 13th (1980) |
Hellraiser (1987) |
Saw (2002) |
When deciding on a soundtrack to use for my trailer attempt, these were my top 5 choices because I liked them the most as they were simple and effective. In the end I decided to choose 'The Fog (1980)' soundtrack because it sounded effective to use and had a decent speed for the beginning of a trailer. However, the only downside to this was the fact that it doesn't speed up towards the end and it doesn't suit the fast pace cuts that a horror trailer would end with. All in all I think that for my first amateur attempt at making a trailer it came out pretty decent since I didn't have any professional editing softwares to use and I was using 'Windows Movie Maker' that withheld me from creating a trailer to the best of my abilities. I guess it's a learning curve and I had to make due.

Whilst living in the boarding school Hannah had made friends with two other students named Amelia and Cleo one day whilst all the students were having breakfast in the dining hall the mail arrived as it usually
does, however this time Hannah received a gift it was neither her birthday or Christmas and this was very strange as Hannah never receives mail.
Hannah opens her small and unexpected parcel to find a small box inside; a note is attached to the box and reads:
“To my dearest Hannah, this was given to me from my mother and was given to her from her mother and I have found that your mother has not given it to you, so I have taken the liberty of giving you this small gift.
- Auntie Carolina.”
Hannah takes the box up into her dorm before lesson, alone. Hannah turns the handle and lifts the lid as and a soft song plays and a small figure inside slowly spins, she closes the box and thinks nothing of it before placing in her trunk, she contemplated if she should contact her mother but knew not to.
A few days pass and Hannah soon forgets the strange gift she was given but one night in the dorm a strange smell of rotting flesh awakens her she can hear the soft sound of music the little box played throughout the room, she looks up to find the figure from the box standing at the foot of her bed, Hannah quickly pulls the covers over her head and repeats her Hail Mary’s. During the day Hannah continues to smell the rotting smell, asking her friends if they do to which they happen not to.
Hannah soon begins to see figures and people who in a glance become distorted demons/creatures before becoming normal again. Hannah begins to hear the soft music over and over constantly playing no matter if she is awake or asleep the smell attached constantly with her. Hannah’s friends soon begin to worry as she is jumpy and begins to withdraw herself socially; Hannah is seeing these demonic faces more and more and finally musters up the courage to remove the box from her trunk and look into it one last for clues as to what’s going on. Hannah takes the box to the school chapel and presents it to Sister Majorette; the Nun quickly begins to mutter prayers under her breath she grabs Hannah and tells her of the demon which is attached to this box and is feeding off Hannah’s fear as it grows stronger attempting to enter Hannah and possess her body before tormenting her until her last breath. Hannah turns to Father Wentworth to bless her and exorcise the demon from the box and remove it from her life.
Hannah is strapped to a chair along with the box at her feet as Father Wentworth prepares the exorcism he and Sister Majorette begin to chant as dark smoke envelopes the room along with the soft music and the rotting smell.
A voice sweet and that of a young woman speaks before becoming that of a man as it says:
